Today in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln spent the evening in his study discussing the works of William Shakespeare with painter Francis Carpenter. Carpenter was a descendant of the Rehoboth Carpenter family. This family included Willard Carpenter, the enterprising pioneer, citizen, and benefactor of Evansville who lived from 1803 to 1883.
